No passive consumption
Until recently, I was one of the 70% (or more!) of Americans who are obese. The reasons that got me there are similar to countless others.
The thing that got me out of that unhealthy state was becoming active in what I consume.
No Passive Consumption has become my newest refrain.
When I started to become active about my food consumption, I began to not only question the quantity of the food I was consuming, but also the quality.
This same principle of being active about food consumption can be applied to everything we consume.
In particular: Media.
We ought to be active about the media we consume.
For instance, did you plan on opening this email? Or, are you just “killing time” at the moment?
Do you reflexively open social media every time you sit down the same way I used to compulsively spark a cigarette whenever I’d get into my car?
I get it. I’m that person every time I stop choosing to live to a standard that I know makes me better: Not just better for myself, either; better for everyone around me as well.
I know what it’s like because that’s where I was until I started being intentional and active in my consumption.
Like everything in life, it isn’t perfect every day.
However, choosing to do the things that will benefit other areas of your life (even if they’re hard or unpleasant) will perpetuate a better state of living.
And this better state of living will ultimately have you more prepared for what life brings your way.
As a media producer, and someone who likes to tell stories for both artistic and commercial purposes, I believe it is our responsibility to encourage action beyond the media: To take act in the world, to introspect and change, to be inspired and create, etc.
Be active in your consumption of all things, consider it’s source as well as the path it took from its origin to you and be sure to consume the highest quality you can as often as you can; and the lower quality as rarely as possible.
I hope that this has been useful to you, and if you decide to start scheduling when you check your emails, I’ll be back in your inbox next Thursday evening.
